Common causes of burns and burn-related injuries

If your burn injuries were someone else’s fault, we may be able to help you make a “no win no fee” compensation claim.

Medical burn classifications

Burns are categorised into a first, second, third and fourth degree. This is determined by how the burn penetrates your layers of skin (dermis.)

First-degree burns

First-degree burns affect the first layer of skin known as the epidermis layer.

A common cause of a first-degree burn would be an injury to the hands and upper body limbs from hot water or steam.

They don’t usually require urgent medical attention. Complications may arise if the burn site becomes infected.

Second-degree burns

Second-degree burns affect the layer of tissue beneath the top layer of skin. Second-degree burns cause damage to nerve endings, sweat glands, and blood vessels. This type of burn causes the skin to become bright red and blistered.

Third-degree burns

Third-degree burns, known also as full thickness burns, correspond to all three layers of skin sustaining damage.

Recovering from this type of burn can take months or even years. In most cases, it’s a painful, drawn-out process. Third-degree burns are considered a serious injury and often cause scarring and permanent disability. Corrective surgery may have been required.

Fourth-degree burns

Fourth-degree burns are the most severe type of burn injury and cause major damage to bones, tendons, and muscles. Damage to nerve endings causes loss of feeling and sensation and always requires urgent medical treatment, surgery, and skin grafts. In severe fourth-degree burn cases amputation is the only option.

Unfortunately, fourth-degree burns are life-altering, and if not treated properly, fatal.

How much compensation am I entitled to?

Every burn injury is different and has nuances that will affect the disbursement of compensation to the injured party. The level of compensation awarded will vary on a case by case basis. Even so, compensation is determined by three major factors:

  • The severity of their injuries
  • Financial losses they have incurred, and are liable to incur due to incapacitation
  • Their level of culpability in causing the accident

One or a combination of these facets of a burn injury can influence your level of compensation.
